Cornwall Council Opens Nominations for Sixty Over Sixty Campaign
A new campaign has launched to recognise older people across Cornwall who are making a real difference in their communities.
Cornwall Council is inviting nominations for Sixty Over Sixty, a scheme designed to celebrate residents aged sixty and over who are proving that age is no barrier to contributing, inspiring and supporting others.
Celebrating positive ageing in Cornwall
The campaign is now open and aims to challenge negative perceptions of ageing while highlighting the many ways older residents support life across Cornwall. This includes volunteering, mentoring, organising activities and helping neighbours.
Cabinet Member for Adults, Councillor Jim McKenna, said:
“We know how much older people do for their communities, from volunteering and mentoring to organising local projects and supporting neighbours.
“The 60 Over 60 campaign is an opportunity to celebrate their hard work and ensure these residents receive the recognition they deserve.
“It’s also a great opportunity to find residents whose stories can inspire others to make small changes to their lives, which will help to live and age well.”
Who can be nominated?
Anyone can put forward a nomination, including residents, friends, family members and community groups. Self nominations are also welcome and can be made through the Cornwall Council website.
The campaign is open to anyone aged sixty or over who is making a positive difference locally or beyond.

Linked to Age Friendly Community plans
This year’s campaign runs alongside Cornwall’s application to become officially recognised as an Age Friendly Community.
Age Friendly Communities follow a framework set out by the World Health Organisation, covering eight key areas. These include outdoor spaces and buildings, transport, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services.
Jim added:
“Our ambition to become an Age Friendly Community reinforces our commitment to support people to live healthy and dignified lives.
“Sixty over Sixty recognises those people who are living these values and who are inspiring to others.”
How to nominate
Nominations are now open and will close on 16th February. All entries will be reviewed by an expert panel of judges.
Those selected will be invited to a cream tea event at County Hall on 16 April 2025.
