Oddfellows District Meeting Highlights Year of Progress and Plans Ahead

The Plymouth and Truro District of the Oddfellows Friendly Society has marked another milestone with a successful Annual Summoned Meeting, highlighting a year of progress, stability and growing community engagement.

Members travelled from across Cornwall and Plymouth to attend, beginning the day with refreshments and conversation before moving into the formal proceedings.

A Day of Reflection and Progress

The meeting was opened and chaired by Provincial Grand Master Tina, starting with the traditional singing of the Oddfellows Ode. Attendees then observed a one minute silence in remembrance of members who had passed away.

Guided by Tina, the meeting followed a full agenda covering key areas of the Society’s work.

Reports confirmed that the District’s finances, which had recently undergone a professional audit, remain in excellent order. Trustees provided updates and confirmed District Officers for the year ahead.

A detailed welfare report highlighted the Society’s continued commitment to supporting members through practical assistance and financial aid.

Community Activities and Future Plans

Discussions also focused on the wide range of activities and support available across the District. These include friendship groups, lunches, yoga sessions, ceremonial events, charitable grant opportunities and support for members attending regional and national conferences.

Plans were also outlined to expand the Society’s reach, particularly through its friendship and dining groups across Cornwall and Plymouth.

Leadership Changes Announced

After a break for a traditional pasty lunch, the meeting resumed with the ceremonial installation of new District Officers.

Tina formally handed over her role to Mike, who had previously served as Deputy and now takes on the position of Provincial Grand Master. Tony was appointed Provincial Deputy Grand Master.

Tina will continue to support the District as Immediate Past Provincial Grand Master, helping to ensure continuity in leadership.

The meeting concluded with expressions of thanks and the traditional closing ode, accompanied by a keyboard performance.

Reflecting on the meeting, Mike said:

“Today has been a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with shared purpose and goodwill. Our discussions were both constructive and harmonious and I am excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue to strive to strengthen and expand our presence across the District.”

Peter English, Provincial Corresponding Secretary, added:

“It is both inspiring and humbling to witness the dedication shown by our members and friends. Their commitment is the lifeblood of our Society and occasions like this reaffirm the Oddfellows as not only an organisation but a truly supportive and enduring community.”
