Oddfellows Mark Ian’s Service at Redruth Ceremony

Behind the doors of a hall on Green Lane, members of one of Britain’s oldest fraternal societies gathered in full regalia for a ceremony that has changed little in generations.

The Loyal Cornubian Lodge of the Oddfellows Friendly Society held an extended ceremonial meeting at Oddfellows Hall in Redruth, where Provincial Organist Bro. Ian was presented with the Past Officer’s Degrees.

A Long-Standing Member Honoured

The degrees were awarded in recognition of Ian’s long-standing service to the lodge and his successful completion of a series of lectures.

The ceremony was presided over by the Provincial Grand Master, Bro. Mike, and followed traditions that go back generations within the Society. Ian was supported throughout by Bros. Bill, Pete, Tony and Sis. Tina, with members from across the district attending in full regalia.

Tradition Meets Modern Inclusivity

The Oddfellows is one of the UK’s longest-established fraternal organisations, and ceremonial degrees like this one remain part of its heritage. Both men and women can take part.

That said, members are under no obligation to take part in the ceremonial side of things. Many instead get involved through friendship groups, social activities and community events run by the Society.

After the ceremony, members stayed on for refreshments.

Speaking afterwards, Ian said: “Receiving these degrees has been a genuinely special and memorable experience for me. The lectures have given me a real appreciation of the Society’s traditions.

“I’m truly grateful to everyone who supported and encouraged me along the way. It says a lot about the spirit of the Oddfellows, there’s always someone ready to lend a hand or share a word of encouragement.

“What makes it so worthwhile is the sense of belonging. Whether you come along for the traditions or simply for the friendship groups and social activities or indeed all of these, you’re always made to feel welcome.”

Open to New Members

The Plymouth and Truro District of the Oddfellows is part of one of the UK’s oldest friendly societies and welcomes new members of all ages and backgrounds.

Members across Redruth, Truro, Plymouth and surrounding areas take part in friendship groups, lunches, organised trips, quizzes, talks, games, competitions and special events. Membership also includes welfare and care support, a members advice line, a dedicated travel club, organised holidays, and opportunities to volunteer for local, national and international good causes.
