Pasties at 1,384ft? Cornish Group Claims Unusual Record

A group from Camelford marked St Piran’s Day with a challenge that involved running, climbing and eating pasties at what they say is a record breaking height in Cornwall.

Members of Camelford Up and Running set out on Thursday 5th March 2026 with a simple but unusual aim. They wanted to eat a pasty higher in Cornwall than anyone ever had before.

With Cornwall’s highest point at 1,378ft above sea level, their plan was to reach the summit of Brown Willy and then climb even higher.

A Run, a Walk and a Ladder

The group ran from Camelford to Roughtor car park before meeting other members and continuing together on foot to the summit of Brown Willy. The route out was around four and a half miles.

Along the way they carried a six foot step ladder and a bag of pasties as they headed for the top.

Weather conditions were overcast but dry, although low cloud brought periods of dense fog. The wet ground also made parts of the walk slippery and there were a few slips and trips on the way back.

Music helped keep spirits high during the journey, with the group listening to songs including Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Walk This Way, On Top of the World, The Wanderer and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.

Reaching the Summit

At the top of Brown Willy the group were greeted by Pete and Lorraine, who had arrived ahead of them. Pete has taken part in many of the group’s St Piran’s Day challenges over the years.

With the ladder set up and supported, members took turns climbing the extra six feet to eat their pasties at a height of 1,384ft above sea level.

After taking photos at the summit, the group also shared jam first scones and Cornish cider before gathering together to sing Cornwall My Home by Harry Glasson.

Camelford Up and Running described the day as a moment of achievement and friendship, saying that sometimes the most unusual ideas turn out to be the most memorable.
