Redruth and Truro Oddfellows Hold Photography Afternoon
A cup of tea, a plate of scones and a room full of photographs. That was the scene when members of the Oddfellows Friendly Society from Redruth and Truro met up recently, and by the time the last drop had been poured they had been handed a challenge to mull over for the rest of the year.
The afternoon was billed as one of friendship, entertainment and refreshments, but the centrepiece was a presentation by local photographer Peter. Members spent the session admiring a collection of his photographs, with each image accompanied by his own commentary and insights. The display got people talking, and there was no shortage of appreciation in the room.

A proper cream tea
No Cornish gathering would be complete without one, and this was no exception. Members were treated to a traditional cream tea of scones served with jam and clotted cream. There were chocolate biscuits, rolls and fresh fruit on offer too, along with cups of tea and coffee. The refreshments went down well and were singled out by members as a big part of what made the afternoon feel so welcoming.
The ‘Memories of Summer’ challenge
The bit that has given members something to think about came when Peter announced a new photography competition. The theme is ‘Memories of Summer’, and members have been invited to capture and submit a photograph that fits the brief. The winning entry will be revealed later this year. According to the society, the competition has already generated plenty of enthusiasm among members keen to show off their creativity.
A raffle, and plenty to take home
A fun raffle ran alongside the afternoon and raised extra funds for a local charity. Which cause will benefit has not been settled yet, with members due to decide on a worthy recipient at a future meeting.
There was also a fair bit to carry home. Free books, DVDs and jigsaw puzzles were laid out for members to help themselves to, alongside the ever popular take home puzzle sheet.
Asked how they found the sessions, members reached for words like colourful, artistic, enjoyable and truly memorable.
