A South East Cornwall gem at the heart of government
Anna Gelderd, MP for South East Cornwall, welcomed Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre to Number 11 this week as part of the Labour Government’s new Great British Summer Savings scheme. She invited Lucy Donald, General Manager of Sterts, to a reception celebrating the initiative, putting one of the area’s much loved attractions alongside organisations from across the country.
Anna said:
“South East Cornwall has so many fantastic places to visit during the summer, from theatres and attractions to brilliant independent cafés and restaurants. I know many families have had to think twice before planning days out in recent years, so it’s great to see support that helps make those moments more affordable.
“It was a real pleasure to welcome Lucy from Sterts to Number 11 Downing Street this week. Sterts is one of South East Cornwall’s gems, and I was proud to showcase it at the heart of government as part of this initiative.
“I hope families across South East Cornwall can make the most of these savings over the summer holidays, while also supporting the local businesses and attractions that make our communities such wonderful places to live and visit.”
What the savings mean for families
Ahead of the school holidays, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has brought in a temporary cut to VAT, from 20% to 5%, on eligible children’s meals, family attractions and entertainment. In England, children aged 5 to 15 will also travel free on local bus services throughout August.
The scheme runs from 25 June until 1 September 2026. It is designed to put more money back into families’ pockets while lifting footfall for businesses during the busy summer season.
The Chancellor said:
“Whether it is a fun day out, a family meal or a visit to one of the thousands of amazing attractions across the UK, Great British Summer Savings will support families with the little treats this summer while boosting business across the UK.
“This comes on top of support Labour has already put in place including freezing fuel duty, taking £117 off energy bills, freezing prescriptions, fuel duty and rail fares.
“We are able to do this because we have made the right choices, with the UK having the fastest growing economy in the G7.”
What is covered
The temporary VAT reduction applies across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It covers:
- Children’s menu meals served in restaurants for eating on the premises
- Children’s and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, shows and exhibitions
- Admission tickets, for both children and adults, to a range of attractions including amusement parks, fairs, museums, zoos, soft play centres, circuses, adventure parks, nature reserves, wildlife parks and observation attractions
The Government expects participating businesses to pass on the VAT savings to customers.
Lucy said:
“We’re thrilled to have represented South East Cornwall at Downing Street on Monday. There is a huge range of cultural activity going on across Cornwall in the coming months. However, it’s a challenging time for small businesses and cultural organisations, so please do support local where you can.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming you to Sterts this summer to enjoy the best of performances, nature and creativity. Our programme is packed and there is more to come!”
