Camel Trail extension to Camelford “one step closer”, says MP

Anyone who has cycled the Camel Trail knows where it stops. A plan to change that has just taken another step forward in Westminster.

Meeting with DEFRA Minister

The Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, Ben Maguire, has welcomed further progress in his campaign to extend the popular cycling trail following a meeting with DEFRA Minister Baroness Hayman.

Joined by two fellow Cornish MPs, Ben Maguire discussed how the proposed plans to extend part of the Camel Trail could fit within the Government’s upcoming “National River Walks” programme, building on the feasibility study secured earlier this year. Later phases would one day aim to connect the new section fully to the rest of the trail.

What it could mean for Camelford

The MP said a new section of the Camel Trail would bring significant economic benefits to Camelford by attracting more visitors, supporting local businesses and encouraging regeneration. It would also create new opportunities for walking, cycling and outdoor recreation for people living in the area.

“I’m pleased to have had such a positive meeting with Baroness Hayman to discuss the next steps for extending the Camel Trail with a new section at Camelford,” Ben Maguire said.

“This is a really exciting opportunity to bring more visitors into the town of Camelford and North Cornwall as a whole, to support our high streets and encourage healthier, more active lifestyles for locals. It’s exactly the kind of investment rural areas like ours need at the moment.”

What happens next

Ben Maguire said he would keep working with the Government, Cornwall Council and local partners to move the plan along.

“I’m grateful for the Minister’s engagement and the cross-party backing, and I’ll be working closely with the Government, Cornwall Council, and local partners in the meantime to keep this momentum going and bring this plan to life,” he said.
