MP Anna Gelderd Voices Concern Over Tamar Tolls Increase at Public Inquiry
Anna Gelderd, MP for South East Cornwall, has raised serious concerns about the proposed toll increase for the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry at a public inquiry held on 15th October 2024. The crossings are critical to residents and businesses, many of whom rely on them for access to employment, education, and healthcare.
Public Outcry Over Tolls
In response to the proposal, Anna launched an impartial survey to gather feedback from her constituents. The survey, which received almost 900 responses, showed significant dissatisfaction with both the current tolls and the proposed hike. More than 75% of respondents reported spending between £100 and £500 per year on tolls, creating a considerable financial burden for many.
Speaking at the inquiry, Anna emphasised that the tolls are especially problematic for residents of South East Cornwall, a region already facing lower-than-average incomes. Many locals have no alternative but to use the Tamar crossings regularly, and the tolls, despite the TamarTag discount, disproportionately affect those who rely on them the most.
“These toll hikes hurt us. The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry services are lifelines for many in South East Cornwall, and this increase will hit families, workers, and local businesses hard,” said Anna.
Call for a Broader Perspective
Anna called on the inquiry to consider the broader economic and social impacts of the toll increase, highlighting that the Tamar crossings are vital infrastructure for the region. She argued that the financial strain the tolls place on South East Cornwall residents must be taken into account and urged transparency around how toll revenue is being used.
In her statement, she also emphasised the importance of maintaining services, particularly the Torpoint Ferry. Any cuts to these services, she said, would further disadvantage residents and businesses.
“It’s time for a fairer approach,” Anna said, vowing to continue advocating for her constituents and pushing for long-term changes to the toll system that better support local communities.
Next Steps
Anna has pledged to remain actively involved in discussions about the toll system and its impact on South East Cornwall, working towards a more equitable solution for local residents. The public inquiry will continue to review the feedback and evidence presented, with a decision on the proposed toll increase expected in the coming months.
