North Cornwall MP Ben Maguire takes on FIFA over Trump claims

Cornwall’s Liberal Democrat MP has dragged a row over football, Donald Trump and the World Cup onto the floor of the House of Commons.

What the motion says

Ben Maguire, the MP for North Cornwall and Liberal Democrat Shadow Attorney General, has tabled a Parliamentary motion calling on FIFA to “uphold sporting integrity” and “root out corruption.” He put it forward after reports that a World Cup suspension was overturned following political intervention by US President Donald Trump.

His Early Day Motion raises concern over reports that United States striker Folarin Balogun avoided an automatic one match suspension after alleged intervention by the president. The motion has picked up backing from other MPs. It calls on FIFA to make sure sporting decisions are taken independently, transparently and free from political influence, and to take stronger action to restore confidence in how the game is run.

At the centre of the motion is FIFA’s decision to lift the automatic one match ban on Balogun, the United States striker. Ben Maguire’s wording ties that to reports of political interference from Donald Trump. It stops short of treating the interference as proven, framing the concern around what has been reported rather than established.

Fans priced out

The motion then turns to money. It flags concern over FIFA’s ticketing policies and what it describes as excessive prices, arguing that many lifelong supporters can no longer afford to watch their national teams compete on the biggest stage. Ben Maguire’s position is that a game meant to be open to everyone is shutting ordinary fans out of international tournaments.

“Football belongs to its supporters, not Donald Trump or Gianni Infantino,” Ben Maguire said. “Any suggestion that political pressure has influenced decisions on the world’s biggest sporting stage risks undermining confidence in the integrity of the game.”

He said key decisions, including where the World Cup is hosted, are too often taken behind closed doors, and that the sport must stay within reach of ordinary supporters “rather than becoming something only the very wealthiest can afford to experience.”

The motion asks FIFA to uphold the principles of sporting integrity, transparency and fair access for fans while rooting out corruption in all its forms. Whether it gets debated is another matter.
