Anna Gelderd delivered her maiden speech in the House of Commons yesterday, marking a historic moment as South East Cornwall’s first Labour MP. In a heartfelt address, Anna outlined her vision for the region, pledging to fight for better services, stronger communities, and fairer opportunities.

Celebrating South East Cornwall’s Strengths

During her speech, Anna paid tribute to South East Cornwall’s unique beauty, highlighting its stunning coastline, close-knit communities, and rich history. She praised the vital contributions of farming, fishing, and tourism to the local economy, emphasising the resilience and pride of the region.

Anna also took the opportunity to thank her predecessors, Sheryll Murray and Colin Breed, for their years of service to the area. Reflecting on her own journey, Anna acknowledged the inspiration she drew from late Labour MP Jo Cox and Baroness Harriet Harman, both of whom she had the privilege to work alongside.

“I am more aware than ever of the incredible privilege it is to be here on behalf of South East Cornwall, a place that I love and am proud to call my home,” Anna said.

Key Commitments to South East Cornwall

Anna outlined several priorities for her term in office, pledging to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing the region:

  • Supporting Farmers and Fishers
Anna committed to championing local farming and fishing industries, recognising their importance not only to South East Cornwall’s economy but also to national food security.
  • Improving Transport Links
She highlighted the need for better connectivity, aiming to address transport barriers that she said divide communities and stifle economic growth.
  • Fighting for Rural Healthcare
Anna called for improved access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas, with a focus on better special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision.
  • Protecting Cornwall’s Environment
Anna underscored the importance of safeguarding the natural beauty of Cornwall, which she described as central to both the region’s identity and its thriving tourism sector.

“Our economy is a story of resilience, woven from the threads of small businesses such as the market gardens of the Tamar Valley, tourism, farming, and an in-shore fishing fleet that deserves more recognition and support,” she said.

A Vision for the Future

Anna concluded her speech with a heartfelt tribute to the people of South East Cornwall, expressing gratitude for their generosity and determination.

“I stand here, ultimately, with gratitude for the incredible people of South East Cornwall. I have seen generosity and determination that inspire me daily. This is why I’m here and why I’m honoured to be working to connect our past, our present, and to help build our future together.”

As Anna begins her parliamentary journey, her pledges to support local industries, enhance connectivity, and protect Cornwall’s natural environment have set the tone for her commitment to the region.
