Cornwall Blood Bikes join Cornwall Hospice’s world record bid

Most weekends, Cornwall Blood Bikes volunteers do their job quietly, out on the roads at whatever hour the NHS needs them, largely unseen by anyone but the patients they help. This Saturday is different. For a few hours at the Royal Cornwall Showground, they will be swapping the night shift for a very public party, and by their own admission, quite a lot of cream tea.

A partnership that goes back to 2017

The volunteers are joining Cornwall Hospice for The Great Cornish Cream Tea, part of the charity’s celebrations as it marks 45 years of care in Cornwall. Cornwall Blood Bikes has worked alongside the charity since 2017, offering a free out of hours delivery service to both of its hospices, St Julia’s in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell.

It is a relationship the riders are proud of. Cornwall Hospice provides specialist care for people with life limiting conditions and support for their families, and the blood bike volunteers see themselves as a small part of making that possible, turning out on their motorcycles whenever a delivery is needed, day or night.

The bid to break a world record

There is a serious goal behind the party. Cornwall Hospice is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest cream tea party, and it needs a crowd to do it. The charity is asking people to come along to the Royal Cornwall Showground exhibition halls and be counted, with arrival by 1pm essential if you want to go towards the record attempt.

What’s on, and how to get a seat

The day opens at 11am with local traders, pop up shops and live music, plus an appearance from broadcaster Johnny Cowling, who is hosting. Spots can be booked online or in any Cornwall Hospice shop.

Cornwall Blood Bikes will be there with a couple of their motorcycles on show, marking the milestone alongside everyone else. As the volunteers put it themselves, a blood biker can eat a cream tea or two. Whether they’ll be jam first or cream first is, as ever in Cornwall, a question nobody dares answer out loud.
