What Is the Creative Census?
Each year, Cornwall Council conducts the Creative Census to track employment, business longevity, and industry trends within creative sectors such as:
- Advertising
- Architecture
- Arts and culture
- Crafts
- Design
- Fashion
- Software and gaming
- Music, publishing, TV, and film
In 2024, data from the census revealed that 10,870 individuals were employed in creative-related occupations across Cornwall. 60% of respondents were sole traders or freelancers, highlighting the sector’s reliance on independent workers.
The Numbers Behind Cornwall’s Creative Scene
The 2024 findings also showed that 47% of creative businesses in Cornwall have been operating for 11 years or more, indicating a well-established industry. Almost half of those surveyed worked in music, performance, or visual arts.
The census also seeks to understand the barriers faced by those in the industry and what support is needed to help them succeed.
Carol Mould, portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods at Cornwall Council, emphasised the importance of these findings, stating:
“The creative industries are such a valuable part of Cornwall’s economy.
We have so many unique businesses and talented individuals who are making their mark in Cornwall. Data from the census helps us to recognise how we can support them and help others to thrive in the creative industries.”
Have Your Say
The results of the Creative Census help shape Cornwall Council’s policies to better support those working in the sector. If you’re a creative professional in Cornwall, taking part in the survey can help ensure your voice is heard.
