Hayle Roofer Leaves Customers £50,000 Out of Pocket: Sentenced for Fraud

A rogue roofer from Angarrack, Hayle, who left his customers facing losses totalling £50,000, has been sentenced after a prosecution led by Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team.

Fraudulent Representations and Poor Workmanship

Ross Cheal, aged 46, formerly the director of Giant Roofing Ltd, admitted to one count of fraud at an earlier hearing. Between 1st May 2020 and 30th April 2023, Cheal made fraudulent representations regarding roofing works at several properties.

An investigation by Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team revealed significant issues in seven cases, including delayed projects, poor craftsmanship, and refusal to rectify substandard work. In total, Cheal’s actions resulted in a financial burden of around £50,000 for his customers, many of whom had to pay additional fees to correct the roofing issues.

Sentencing at Truro Crown Court

On 9th January, Cheal appeared at Truro Crown Court, where he received a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. The court also ordered him to pay £29,541 in compensation to his victims and contribute £5,000 towards Cornwall Council’s legal costs.

Council’s Commitment to Protect Consumers

Martyn Alvey, portfolio holder for Public Protection at Cornwall Council, stated:

“This is another unfortunate example of customers being hit financially by traders and businesses who take no care in the quality of their work, and then actively mislead customers to avoid their responsibilities.

“We always look to provide advice and guidance to businesses where possible, but sometimes there is no alternative but to take formal action, and we hope that this prosecution sends a strong message to others.”

Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team continues to take steps to hold businesses accountable and ensure consumer protection.
