Helston car park charges petition heads back to Cornwall Council

A watering can and a bucket used to be the only things you’d argue about at a car park. In Helston, it’s parking charges, and the argument is now heading back to County Hall.

What the petition is asking for

A new petition is calling on Cornwall Council to bring the introduction of parking charges at Helston’s Fairground Car Park before a Full Council meeting in September, for what the campaign calls an open and transparent debate. It wants residents, businesses and councillors given the chance to have their say in public rather than waiting on an internal review.

The petition was started by Craig Scott and had reached 4,029 verified signatures at the time of writing. Under Cornwall Council’s own Petition Scheme, a petition on a county-wide issue that reaches 5,000 signatures can be considered for debate at Full Council. Craig’s campaign says an earlier petition came close to that mark and fell short, and this one is trying to get it over the line.

The impact people say they’re feeling

The petition describes a car park that matters well beyond Helston itself. It says local businesses are reporting reduced footfall, that residents are seeing more parking pressure on surrounding streets, and that the charges are making the area harder to reach for some people with health conditions or mobility issues.

Cornwall Council has said it will review the situation, but the campaign argues residents shouldn’t have to wait months while the impact plays out, and wants the issue debated in public now rather than later.

“Vandalism isn’t the answer”

The petition is explicit that it wants nothing to do with the damage some parking disputes elsewhere have attracted. It states plainly that vandalism and criminal damage aren’t the answer, and that damaging ticket machines or council property only distracts from the real issue and risks undermining what it calls the genuine concerns of thousands of residents. The campaign frames itself instead as a democratic one, built on getting people to sign and be counted.

You don’t have to live in Helston, or use the car park every day, to add your name. The petition makes the case that anyone who shops, works, visits family or supports local businesses in the town has a stake in what happens to it.

Gathering evidence

Alongside the petition, the campaign is asking anyone affected by the charges to email their experiences to [email protected], whether that’s fewer customers through the door, trouble finding a space, or parking displaced onto nearby streets. The petition was created on 24 July 2026, and organisers say every signature adds to the case for putting the question in front of Full Council rather than letting it review quietly in the background.

Signatories are reminded to confirm their email after signing, or the signature doesn’t count.
