Roofing Warning Issued After Rise in Costly Work Reports

Cornwall Council has issued a warning to residents following an increase in reports of over-priced, poor quality and unnecessary roofing work.

The council’s Trading Standards team is urging people to take extra care when hiring tradespeople and to avoid making quick decisions.

Concerns Over Cold Callers

Residents are being advised not to hire traders who turn up uninvited at their door. According to Trading Standards, reputable businesses do not operate in this way.

There are also concerns about some websites that list tradespeople without carrying out proper checks, meaning customers could unknowingly hire unverified traders.

Steps To Stay Safe

To reduce the risk of problems, Cornwall Council recommends using local businesses that come recommended by trusted sources. It also advises getting at least two quotes before agreeing to any work.

Residents can also use the Buy With Confidence scheme to find traders who have been vetted and approved by Trading Standards.

Take Your Time Before Agreeing

Unless the situation is an emergency, people are encouraged not to rush into decisions. Customers should be aware that they have 14 days to change their mind after agreeing to work.

The warning comes as Trading Standards continues to respond to reports linked to roofing work across Cornwall.
