Trading Standards Issues Warning Over Rise in Fake Goods in Cornwall
Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team is urging people to be cautious after spotting a rise in counterfeit goods being advertised across the county.
Rise in Fake Listings
According to the team, more local sellers have been promoting counterfeit items online, including football shirts, designer handbags, toys, branded clothing and footwear. Several sellers are already under investigation.
These fake items are often labelled as replicas and sold at much lower prices than genuine products. Trading Standards say they are usually made from poor quality materials, can pose safety risks and undermine legitimate businesses.
Selling counterfeit goods online, at markets or through social media is a criminal offence under the Trade Marks Act 1994.
Serious Consequences for Sellers
Gary Webster, Trading Standards Group Leader at Cornwall Council, said:
“Counterfeit goods harm our local economy. These illegal sellers undermine local retailers and damage the reputation of trusted brands.
In the case of electrical items or toys, these items can pose a real danger to consumers.
Anyone caught selling fake products could face prosecution, hefty fines, and even imprisonment.
We encourage people to buy from reputable sources and report any suspected counterfeit activity to Trading Standards.”
Accounts linked to the illegal sales may be flagged, suspended or permanently closed. Money made from selling counterfeit goods can also be confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act, leading to financial investigations and the loss of any profits gained.
Trading Standards continues to work closely with police to protect consumers and tackle the issue.
How to Report Suspicious Activity
If you suspect counterfeit goods are being sold, you can report it through Citizens Advice Consumer Service or call 0808 223 1133.
