Cornwall Libraries Named South West Library of the Year 2026

Cornwall Libraries has been named the South West regional winner for Library of the Year at the British Book Awards 2026.

The recognition places Cornwall’s library service among the top in the country and secures its place in the national final later this year.

Recognised for Bringing Communities Together

The award submission highlighted the role libraries play in helping people connect across Cornwall.

It focused in particular on work carried out with Cornwall Council’s Resettlement Team. Libraries have supported families settling in Cornwall by providing welcoming places where people can meet others, take part in activities and begin to feel part of their new communities.

More Than Just Books

In a statement announcing the award, Cornwall Libraries said their spaces offer far more than shelves of books.

“Libraries are about so much more than books. (Although we love those too!) They are places where people can connect, where they can discover new interests or dig deeper into the things they are already excited about. Where people can learn and feel supported with their wellbeing. Where people can come with no demands made of them. Little sanctuaries in a challenging world.”

The service also thanked the many people who contribute to running libraries across Cornwall.

“A huge thank you to our amazing staff, volunteers, partners and customers who make Cornwall’s libraries such special places every day.”

Next Stop: National Final

With the South West title secured, Cornwall Libraries will now move forward to the National Library of the Year final at the British Book Awards later in 2026.

For now, library staff, volunteers and customers across Cornwall have reason to celebrate as the region’s libraries gain recognition on a national stage.
