East Cornwall Search and Rescue Team Called Out Twice in 24 Hours

Most of Cornwall was settling in for the night when the first call came. By the time the weekend was over, one local team had been out twice, in two very different parts of the county, for two very different reasons.

A high-risk search on Bodmin Moor

The first callout came late on Sunday evening (7th June), when East Cornwall Search and Rescue Team was deployed to Bodmin Moor. The team had been asked to help Devon and Cornwall Police search for a high-risk missing male. The weather was getting worse and darkness was closing in, so time mattered.

Shortly after the team arrived, word came through that the missing person had been found safe by police. The volunteers were stood down.

A medical emergency at Crackington Haven

Monday evening (8th June) brought a second callout, this time to Crackington Haven. The team was requested to support the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust with a medical emergency.

Reaching the casualty was not straightforward. Team members used specialist equipment to stretcher the patient out of a difficult location and to a waiting ambulance, which then took them to hospital for treatment.

As the team put it, they are proud of volunteers who respond at any hour, in any conditions, to support the community.

East Cornwall SRT is a local charity. It provides an inland search and rescue service for lost, missing and injured people across East Cornwall, and further afield when needed. It is 100% voluntary and relies on public support to keep the service running.
