Crantock Surf Life Saving Club Confirms No Organised New Year’s Day Dip
Crantock Surf Life Saving Club has responded to enquiries about a New Year’s Day Dip at Crantock Beach, confirming that no public dip will be organised this year.
Short safety patrol planned
While there will be no organised event, the club has said its volunteer lifeguards will carry out a surveillance patrol for a short period on New Year’s Day.
The patrol will run from 10am to 10:15am at the south end of the beach near the Bowgie Inn. Volunteers will also be on the beach from 9:45am to share safety information with anyone planning to enter the water.
The club says this is being done in the interest of public safety.
Cold water safety reminder
In light of recent tragic events in Devon, the club has issued a reminder to anyone considering cold water swimming to follow key safety advice:
-
Always check the conditions and know your own limits. If in any doubt, do not go out.
-
Always go with someone and have a way to call for help, such as a whistle or a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch.
-
Wear a bright swim hat and take a tow float.
-
Acclimatise slowly. Cold water shock is a real danger.
-
Stay within your depth and be aware of rip currents, waves and steep banks.
-
If you get into difficulty, FLOAT like a star.
-
If you see someone else in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Further guidance on staying safe while open water swimming is available on the RNLI website via their page on open water swimming safety.
The club has not encouraged or promoted a New Year’s Day Dip, and anyone choosing to enter the sea is urged to take responsibility for their own safety.
