£200,000 Pot Lands in Camborne, Redruth and Pool to Fight Street Crime

What does £200,000 over two years actually buy three Cornish towns trying to push back against antisocial behaviour? A new picture is starting to come into focus.

Residents in Camborne, Redruth and Pool are set to benefit from a £200,000 two-year investment aimed at tackling street crime and antisocial behaviour, while opening up more support and opportunities for young people in the area.

The money comes from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It has been handed to Safer Cornwall, a community safety partnership made up of statutory organisations, to build on work already happening across the three towns.

Where the money is going

The funding will support a package of measures over the next two years, including:

• Keeping the existing antisocial behaviour officer in Camborne
• A brand new antisocial behaviour officer for Redruth
• Continued funding for a Youth Substance Misuse Worker covering all three areas
• The creation of a Wider Youth Programme
• Community activities in Camborne

The youth programme has yet to be set up but will focus on steering young people away from antisocial behaviour. The community activities pot is also still to be finalised, with possible plans including a community event and a local campaign for residents.

Camborne picked for Street Focus

Camborne has already been selected by the OPCC as the second area to get its Street Focus project, which first launched in Torquay in June 2024. The aim is to improve safety in town and city centres by pulling partners together around a shared plan.

Street Focus Camborne began in November 2025. The town already has an antisocial behaviour officer jointly funded by the OPCC and Camborne Town Council, who holds Community Safety Accreditation Scheme accreditation and steps in early on emerging cases, including street drinking. That sits alongside high-visibility hotspot policing patrols and Street Marshals, who are part funded by the OPCC. Camborne is also part of the PubWatch scheme, which lets hospitality venues work together to head off problems in and around their premises.

What the leaders are saying

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez said: “One of the things that makes Camborne so great is a willingness to work together to create positive changes that will benefit everyone.”

Alison added: “That teamwork has already resulted in reducing crime and making ther streets safer and through my Street Focus project and the additional funding from my office, I am hoping that even more can be achieved, as well as in Redruth and Pool too. For lasting change, it is vital that we also focus on supporting young people to help them make the right choices and give them the opportunities they need to succeed in life.”

Cllr Thalia Marrington, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Health at Cornwall Council, welcomed the news. “It’s great news that the OPCC has chosen Camborne, Pool and Redruth for its Street Focus project. The Safer Cornwall Partnership has been working hard to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour across the area and this significant funding boost will allow us to make the three communities even safer,” she said.

Thalia said prevention was a particular priority for her. “Prevention is key so I am particularly excited to hear about the plans for a youth programme to help divert young people away from crime and antisocial behaviour. It is one of our priorities to create strong, safe and vibrant communities and this funding will help us to achieve this for residents in this area of Cornwall.”

Councillor James Ball, who represents the Camborne Roskear and Tuckingmill Division, said the extra cash would build on work already underway. “We are really pleased to see the extra funding coming to the area. It will make a huge difference to us all working together to continue the hard work already started,” he said.

James added: “Camborne has been so well supported and without this investment in the town, we would not have been able to see the improvements making it safer for everyone to live and visit the amazing town we have.”
