A car travelling at extreme speed was stopped on the new A30 at the weekend after being detected at 114mph close to the scene of a recent serious injury collision.

What Police Saw

According to the Devon & Cornwall Police Road Safety Team, one of their officers was monitoring traffic when an Audi was recorded travelling at 114mph. The occupants were said to be so focused on the speedometer that they failed to notice a camera van ahead.

A short distance further on, a slow moving agricultural vehicle towing a trailer was travelling along the road with amber flashing beacons displayed. The Audi driver appeared intent on driving as fast as possible and only spotted the hazard at the last moment, narrowly avoiding a collision with the back of the trailer.

The Wider Safety Message

Police said they often hear confident but unevidenced claims that driving below the speed limit is more likely to cause a collision than speeding. They questioned who would have been at fault if the Audi had collided with the tractor, and what the outcome for the occupants of the Audi would have been at that speed.

The incident happened close to the scene of a recent serious injury collision, adding to concerns about dangerous driving on this stretch of road.
