Cornwall’s Bike Safe riders take to the road from Falmouth

A line of high-vis jackets outside a Falmouth motorcycle showroom on Saturday morning meant one thing. Another Bike Safe course was under way, part classroom, part open road, and built entirely around riders who already know how to handle a bike but want to get better at it.

On Saturday 22 August, the Bike Safe team from Devon and Cornwall Police ran another Bike Safe course from Ocean BMW Motorrad in Falmouth. It is the latest outing for the force’s rider training scheme, run through its wider road safety operation, and the team was quick to thank Ocean, and specifically Chris and his team, for hosting again.

“A massive thanks to Ocean (Chris and his team) for just being a brilliant dealership and so welcoming,” the Bike Safe team said.

A morning of learning, then an afternoon on Cornish lanes

A group of paying volunteers signed up for the day, spending the morning learning from what the team called “some of the force’s finest”. Lunch followed, then the group spent the afternoon riding through the Cornish countryside, putting the morning’s lessons into practice on real roads rather than in a classroom.

The team described it as a thoroughly enjoyable day, and thanked everyone who came along and took part.

Where to find the Bike Safe team next

The team is not stopping at Falmouth. They will be at the St Austell emergency services day on 5 September, and attending the annual Martin Jennings run on 13 September, where they will be on hand to talk to riders about the courses on offer rather than running a full session.

Anyone wanting to take part can book a place on a Bike Safe course directly. The team’s message to anyone thinking about it is simple: come along to one of the upcoming events and have a chat first if you are not sure.

“We are bikers through and through,” the Bike Safe team said. “Take care and ride safe everyone.”
