Crackdown on Antisocial Behaviour Across Cornwall and Devon: Police Arrest 140 in Targeted Patrols

Hotspot Policing Targets ASB in High-Impact Areas

A data-driven approach to tackle antisocial behaviour (ASB) is being implemented across Devon and Cornwall. Known as hotspot policing, the scheme focuses on areas with high levels of ASB and serious violence. From May to October, over 4,900 hours of additional patrols have been carried out, leading to 140 arrests and the use of 143 ASB enforcement powers, including Public Spaces Protection Orders and Community Protection Notice Warnings.

These targeted patrols, conducted on foot, aim to deter and disrupt crime while engaging with the public. Thirteen areas, including Camborne, Truro, Penzance, and St Austell, are among those benefiting from the initiative.

Funding and Collaboration Boost Patrol Efforts

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez secured £1 million in funding from the Home Office, with an additional £200,000 in match funding to expand the scope of the patrols. This collaborative effort between police and local councils includes street marshals working alongside officers to share intelligence and conduct joint patrols.

Residents and businesses have responded positively to the increased uniformed presence, with feedback indicating that it provides a sense of reassurance. Chief Inspector Tim Evans, who oversees hotspot policing, praised the programme:

“Hotspot policing is an effective way to address antisocial behaviour. The results we’ve seen so far demonstrate the value of this focused approach but the impact of police and street marshals spending time on foot where the public want to see them shouldn’t be overlooked either. The feedback I’m receiving from our partners is really positive about the difference these patrols are making locally.”

Community Initiatives Making a Difference in Torquay

Torquay has seen additional support through Street Focus: Torquay, a project designed to create a safer town centre. This collective effort, led by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, includes support from Torbay Council, SWISCo, and Crimestoppers.

As part of the scheme, a night bus service covering Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham has been introduced for the festive season. Operating every Saturday night, the service aims to reduce drink-related incidents and ASB.

Two new legal support roles, an ASB legal advisor and a paralegal, have also been funded to assist neighbourhood police in addressing persistent ASB cases. These roles are based at Torquay Police Station and Exeter Civic Centre.

Alison Hernandez highlighted the importance of community involvement:

“ASB Awareness Week is a valuable opportunity to show our communities that if they report antisocial behaviour we take it seriously. ASB Case Reviews are a vital tool for residents who have reported ASB three or more times in a six month period. Raising awareness of this process is key to ensure these problems can be dealt with.”

How to Report Antisocial Behaviour

Residents are encouraged to report ASB to Devon and Cornwall Police by calling 999 in emergencies or using the 101 service for non-emergencies. Reports can also be made online or anonymously through Crimestoppers. Persistent issues can be addressed through ASB Case Reviews for those who have reported ASB three or more times within six months.
