What happened in Rectory Road

St Austell Police say officers were called to a report of a disturbance and a serious assault on a man in St Stephen at about 1.30am last Saturday (17 October).

A man in his 30s was found unconscious and seriously injured in Rectory Road. He was treated at the scene and then taken to hospital. No update on his condition has been given.

Four local men arrested

Four local men were later arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, an offence under Section 18. Three of them are in their 20s, and the fourth is 19.

The 19-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

All four have been released on bail until January 2027 while enquiries continue. None of them has been charged. Police believe everyone involved is known to each other.

“An isolated incident”

Officers recognise that word of what happened has spread quickly in the village.

“We are aware that the incident has caused concern in the community but we would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident with no identified threat to the wider community,” the team said.
