Inside Devon and Cornwall’s April Road Crackdown: The Numbers

Nearly a thousand drivers caught without seatbelts. Hundreds more on their phones at the wheel. And that’s just one month’s worth of work from the team trying to keep the South West’s roads in check.

Devon and Cornwall Police Road Safety Team has published its April activity summary, offering a snapshot of what officers and partners have been doing across the region to tackle dangerous driving.

Offences Detected

Seatbelt offences topped the list, with 957 drivers or passengers caught not wearing one. Officers also recorded 327 mobile phone offences during the month.

A further 265 vehicles were seized for being uninsured or unlicensed, and the team received 324 officer-issued tickets.

Community Reporting and Enforcement

Members of the public continue to play a role in road safety enforcement. April saw 664 submissions to Operation Snap, the scheme that allows people to submit video footage of dangerous or illegal driving.

Community Speedwatch volunteers also remained active, running 184 sessions across the two counties. Officers themselves clocked up 453 hours of speed detection.

Education and Referrals

Beyond enforcement, the team delivered 9,230 National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS) educational courses in April.

Two BikeSafe courses were also run, attended by 20 participants. The scheme is aimed at motorcyclists looking to improve their road skills.

The Road Safety Team made 65 medical referrals to the DVLA during the month, flagging drivers whose health may affect their fitness to be behind the wheel.
