Jasper the drugs dog visits pubs in Launceston and Callington

Order a pint in one of Launceston or Callington’s pubs recently and you might have found a new face working the room. Four legs, a black coat, and a nose trained to pick out one thing in particular.

What Operation Pubs Against Drugs involves

Officers carried out a proactive operation across licensed premises in Launceston and Callington as part of Operation Pubs Against Drugs, known as PAD. They were joined by Jasper, a passive drugs detection dog, as they visited a number of venues in both towns.

The operation was designed to discourage the possession, use and supply of illegal drugs, while supporting venues in providing a safe and welcoming environment for customers.

Sending a message to the night-time economy

High-visibility patrols like this one help identify and prevent drug-related activity, while sending a clear message that drug misuse and drug supply will not be tolerated locally. Jasper’s role is a passive one. He does not search bags or pat anyone down, his training means he simply indicates when he picks up a scent, letting officers focus their attention where it is actually needed.

Working with licensees and the public

Police thanked local licensees, staff and members of the public for their support during the operation, saying that by working together, town centres in Launceston and Callington can stay safer places for everyone to enjoy.
