A Plymouth man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after firing a BB gun at a group of people in Launceston town centre, leaving one person with serious injuries.

Late-Night Attack in Launceston

Aiden Cashley, 23, of Budshead Road, Plymouth, became involved in an altercation with a group of people he did not know shortly after 11pm on 28th December 2024.

During the incident, Cashley told the group he had “to get something” before leaving and returning with an imitation firearm concealed in his clothing. He then fired the BB gun multiple times at the group.

One man was struck repeatedly in the arm, suffering serious injuries that later required surgery.

Public Stepped In to Detain Cashley

After the attack, Cashley fled the scene but was detained by members of the public nearby until police officers arrived to arrest him and seize the weapon.

He was later charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and assault causing Actual Bodily Harm.

Three-Year Prison Sentence

Cashley pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced at Truro Crown Court on Tuesday, 4th March, receiving a three-year and one-month jail term. The court also ordered the destruction of the weapon.

Police Warn of Weapon Risks

Investigating officer Detective Constable Hannah Ackford said:

“We welcome the sentence given to Cashley, who carried out this random and serious attack on a group of people who were not known to him.

“There are so many risks associated with possessing weapons and no good can come from it.”

Devon and Cornwall Police have urged the public to report any concerns about weapons in their communities.

If you have information about someone carrying a weapon, you can contact police online.

In an emergency, call 999.
