Police Work With Cornwall Sports Clubs After Equipment Thefts

Clubs Targeted in Costly Thefts Across Cornwall

Police in Cornwall have been working with local sports clubs following a series of burglaries that saw thousands of pounds worth of equipment stolen.

Clubs hit by winter burglaries

Devon & Cornwall Police said officers identified a run of incidents over the winter period, where sports clubs were targeted by burglars. Items taken included tractors, mowers and other high-value equipment.

The thefts had a significant financial impact on clubs across the county, affecting a wide range of groups from children’s teams through to adult football clubs.

Event brings clubs and police together

In response, an event was held at Par Track near St Austell, bringing together clubs from across Cornwall. It was organised by Cornwall Football Association and the Grounds Management Association.

Officers from the Rural Affairs team attended to share advice and promote good practice in keeping equipment safe and secure.

PC Skinner and PC Orchard, who were present at the event, said:
“The burglaries had a significant financial impact on local grass roots clubs and their attendees, from children’s sports clubs to adult football, so many felt the effects of these thefts.

“Sport clubs house a range of equipment, including some farm and plant machinery, all of which are vital to their daily running.

“That’s why it’s important for us team up with partner agencies at prevention events like these in Cornwall, working with clubs to help protect their equipment from thieves, prevent further incidents and deter offenders.

“It’s also a great reminder about how collaboration and awareness can make a real difference in keeping everyone, including property, safe.

“I’d also like to thank the Cornwall FA and the Grounds Management Association – they have been key partners in helping to raise awareness of how clubs can keep their high-value equipment and machinery safe.”

Security advice and new technology shared

During the event, clubs were given advice on storing equipment, improving security and using DNA property marking.

Each participant received a Secured by Design approved forensic property marking solution. This technology can help police reunite stolen items with their rightful owners if recovered.
