Sinjar and Seyin Zurel charged after Truro disorder

Calenick Street sits just off Truro’s main shopping run, a quiet cut-through most people barely notice. On the afternoon of Monday 24 August, it was anything but quiet. By Wednesday morning two men from the city were in custody awaiting a court appearance, over what police have described as a violent disturbance involving a number of people.

What happened on Calenick Street

Devon and Cornwall Police say officers were called to the street at 1.45pm following a report of a violent disturbance involving numerous individuals. One man was taken to hospital with what were initially described as potentially serious injuries. Those injuries have since been assessed as not life-threatening or life-changing.

The charges facing Sinjar and Seyin Zurel

Sinjar Zurel, 27, and Seyin Zurel, 24, both of the Malpas area of Truro, have been charged with two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Sinjar has also been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and with possession of a knife blade or other sharp pointed article in a public place.

Both men have been remanded in custody and were due to appear before Truro Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 26 August.

With criminal proceedings now active, Devon and Cornwall Police is reminding anyone who witnessed events on Calenick Street, or who holds footage of what happened, that sharing it online risks jeopardising the ongoing case. Police say enquiries into the incident continue.
