Are You a Responsible Dog Owner? Beach Safety Tips Every Dog Lover Should Know
The Polzeath Beach Ranger Service recently shared some important reminders for dog owners visiting the beach, focusing on how to keep dogs safe and ensure everyone enjoys their time on the coast.
Keep Your Dog Under Control
Whether you’re at the beach or near cliffs, keeping your dog under control is essential. Dogs should not jump at people, act aggressively, or unintentionally hurt anyone. If your dog tends to do this, it’s best to keep it on a lead in public spaces. Additionally, make sure your dog is always under control when walking near livestock.
Clean Up After Your Dog
Nobody likes stepping in something unpleasant. Polzeath Beach Rangers remind owners to bring a bag for their dog’s waste and clean up after them, especially at the beach. Some areas advocate the “stick and flick” method, but this is generally restricted to woodlands and forests, not beach environments.
Identification Is Key
In the UK, dogs must wear a collar with the owner’s name and contact information, and they must also be microchipped. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £2,000. It’s crucial to keep your dog identifiable at all times, especially in busy areas like beaches.
Keep Children Safe
Even the friendliest dogs can unintentionally hurt someone, particularly children. With children playing, running, and digging on the beach, it’s important to supervise your dog closely to prevent any accidental incidents.
Protect Your Dog from the Sun
In summer months, heat and sunburn can be a risk for dogs. The Beach Rangers also advise dog owners to consider the wellbeing of their furry friends when out for a run along the coastline. Running on hot pavements can hurt dogs, so it’s worth doing a quick check with your own feet before letting your dog join in.
Always Bring Fresh Water
Even if your dog doesn’t drink frequently while out and about, carrying fresh water can be essential, especially during a medical emergency such as choking or an eye injury.
Not Everyone Loves Dogs
It’s important to remember that while you may love your dog, not everyone else feels the same way. Some people are scared or allergic to dogs, so always be mindful of how others around you are reacting to your pet.
Dogs Die in Hot Cars
Even in winter, a car can heat up quickly, and leaving your dog inside with only one window open is not enough. To ensure airflow, at least two windows should be cracked. If you must leave your dog in the car, make sure they have water, cover the windows with a towel or blanket, and check on them frequently.
Polzeath Beach is a great place for dogs, but the Polzeath Beach Ranger Service encourages all visitors to be responsible pet owners.
By following these simple guidelines, you and your dog can enjoy a safe and happy time at the beach!
