You could be standing at the till with a bag of sweets and a plastic pumpkin when an alarm goes off. If it’s your till, you walk out with £10 to spend.

That’s the idea behind Poundstretcher’s Winning Weekend, which is back for Halloween this Friday (30 October) and Saturday (31 October). The discount chain is giving away £57,500 in vouchers over the two days, and its six Cornwall stores are part of it.

How the Winning Weekend works

Every hour from 9am to 6pm on both days, each store will make one surprise announcement at a random moment. Whoever is being served at the winning till when the sound goes off gets a £10 voucher to spend in store.

There’s nothing to register for and no need to sign up in advance. You just need to be in the shop, at the right till, at the right moment.

The giveaway runs across more than 300 Poundstretcher and Bargain Buys stores in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with thousands of vouchers expected to go over the weekend.

Where to find Poundstretcher in Cornwall

Poundstretcher currently trades in six Cornish towns:

  • Truro, Pydar Street
  • Camborne, Trelowarren Street
  • Helston, Coinagehall Street
  • Bodmin, town centre
  • Launceston
  • Newquay, Bank Street

The Newquay and Launceston branches are the newest in the county, both opening this year in units left empty by Poundland. Opening hours vary from store to store, so it’s worth checking your nearest on the Poundstretcher website before heading out. Friday is also the last day of half term in Cornwall, so expect the shops to be busy.

Costumes, displays and a lot of pumpkins

Staff dress up for Halloween every year, and the stores are decked out with themed displays and more than 1,000 Halloween lines on the shelves.

Andy Atkinson, CEO at Poundstretcher, said: “It’s one of my favourite times of the year, and one where we just want to have fun. Each year I visit as many stores as I can to see colleagues in fancy dress and spooking customers with our amazing store displays, it is the best way to make memories.

“Last year’s ‘Winning Weekend’ was so well received, with customers posing for photos next to our displays and having selfies with our staff in fancy dress. We know budgets continue to be stretched, and Winning Weekend is our way of thanking customers, and having a more mischievous weekly shop!”

What else is on the shelves

Alongside the giveaway, shoppers can browse food and drink, health and beauty, household cleaning, homewares, gardening, DIY, storage, pet care, toys and seasonal ranges, with thousands of products priced at 99p.

Poundstretcher will be sharing its winning shoppers on its Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn pages over the weekend.

As Andy put it: “Across our stores, staff and customers never quite know when it’s coming. One minute you’re queuing at the till, the next you’re walking away with an extra £10 to spend.”
