David Jones Qualifies as All Weather Lifeboat Mechanic at Falmouth RNLI
Training continues at Falmouth Lifeboat Station as volunteer crew member David Jones has become the latest to pass out as All Weather Lifeboat Mechanic.
David, who grew up in South Wales, said he watched local RNLI crews head out to sea as a child. It was only after moving to Cornwall that he had the chance to join himself, becoming part of Falmouth RNLI in 2021.
Since then, David has served on both the all-weather and inshore lifeboats.

Training on the Shannon Class
When the station changed its boat to the Shannon class all-weather lifeboat, David took the opportunity to train as a mechanic. He began with Shannon familiarisation training before undertaking the full mechanic training programme.
His formal training started in April 2025, and he passed his assessment in February 2026.
David said: “The learning never stops. Maintaining competency is an essential part of our ongoing training at Falmouth and at the RNLI College in Poole.”
He added: “I am proud to continue serving with the Falmouth crew and look forward to contributing to saving lives at sea for many years to come.”
Supporting 24/7 Launch Capability
Coxswain Luke Wills praised David’s achievement, highlighting the importance of having several qualified mechanics within the crew.
Luke said: “having a number of qualified mechanics ensures that we remain able to launch 24/7, 365 days of the year. Its been a superb effort from Dave, with great feedback from the training team, he is a great asset to the team”
Falmouth Lifeboat Station continues its regular training programme to ensure crew members maintain the skills required to respond whenever they are called upon.
