A ladder propped against the wall, a harness swinging from a firefighter’s hand, and a dog staring down from the very ridge of a roof in Boslowick, working out how he had got quite so high. It was an unusual shout for Falmouth crews yesterday afternoon, and it ended with tails wagging rather than a difficult outcome.

How Sweetie ended up on the roof

Falmouth Community Fire Station says crews were called out yesterday afternoon after a dog was spotted on the ridge of a house roof. Sweetie, a Romanian rescue dog, had apparently climbed out of an upstairs window and onto the roof of his owner’s house to see what was out there.

Getting him down safely

The crew pitched their biggest and most stable ladder, a 13.5 metre model, against the building, and a firefighter climbed up to fit Sweetie with a harness. Once he had it on, Sweetie seemed to know help had arrived. Rather than waiting to be carried, he jumped straight into the arms of the firefighter who had climbed up to get him.

Reunited on the ground

Sweetie was brought safely back down and reunited with his owner. Firefighters said he was in perfect health throughout, and was grateful for a treat and a drink once his feet were back on solid ground.

Falmouth Community Fire Station put it simply afterwards: “We don’t just put out fires.” Anyone wanting fire or safety advice, or curious what else the crews get up to, is welcome to get in touch.
