Falmouth Oyster Festival returns as the dredging season opens

Mark the second week of October in the diary. One of Cornwall’s most-loved food events is coming back to the Falmouth waterfront, and the boats that supply it still work the water in a way almost nowhere else on earth manages.

Four free days on Events Square

The Falmouth Oyster Festival returns to Events Square on Discovery Quay from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 October 2026. It is free to attend, and it marks the moment the oyster dredging season opens, with the native Fal oyster the star of the whole weekend.

The daytime programme runs across all four days and costs nothing to get into. The paid element is the evening headline music, and tickets for those sessions are on sale now.

The native oyster still landed by sail and oar

Falmouth is one of the only places left in the world where native oysters are still harvested by sail and oar. Generations of local oystermen have kept the practice alive, learning to read the tides and winds of the Fal and passing the knowledge down.

The method is low-impact and sustainable, which matters more than it might sound. Working the beds under sail rather than engine helps protect the fragile ecology of the riverbed and the oyster stocks that live on it, so the catch the festival celebrates can keep coming back year after year.

What fills the four days

Beyond the oysters, the free daytime bill is a proper mix. There is live music, chef demonstrations, talks, market stalls and children’s arts and crafts activities spread across the site.

Two fixtures always pull a crowd. The Oyster Shucking Competition puts local skill on show against the clock, and the Working Boat Race sends the traditional fleet out onto the water in front of the town.

The evening music line-up

After dark the ticketed sessions take over. Cornwall’s own Falmouth Soul Sensation open the run on Thursday night with a party that is free to attend. Friday brings Mad Dog McRea and their blend of folk rock, gypsy jazz and bluegrass, fresh off the release of a new album.

Saturday hands the stage to blues harmonica player Giles Robson, with support from soul and roots musician Dave Keller. Then the whole thing winds up on Sunday afternoon with the free closing ceremony from Falmouth favourites the Oggymen. Tickets for the Friday and Saturday nights are the ones now on sale.

Meet the chefs

The chef demonstrations run free every day, and they are a chance to get close to some of the county’s best cooks and seafood people. The focus lands on native oysters, seafood sustainability and cookery masterclasses, drawn from the festival’s own line-up of chefs.

Confirmed so far for 2026 are Annie Seabourne of My Fish Kitchen, Elliot Kett of Kelp Canteen, Sham Mulji of Situ Cafe, Rose Cant of the Instagram account Mum on Muddy Lane, Eddie Rains of The Halfway House, Chris Eden of Watergate Bay Hotel, Hylton Espey of Culture, Nick Evans of Stein’s Cookery School, Ben Harrison of Counter Culture and Guy Owen of Idle Rocks Hotel.
