Illegal E-Bike Seized in Falmouth: Police Send Clear Warning to Riders

An e-bike has been seized in Falmouth as part of ongoing police action to tackle illegal and antisocial use following concerns from the community.

The seizure took place on Saturday 14th February after officers from the Neighbourhood Support Team spotted a rider operating the e-bike without pedals because it had been fitted with an illegal motor.

Safety at the Centre of Action

Inspector Rick Milburn, who heads up neighbourhood officers in the area, said the priority is public safety.

He said:

“Ultimately, we want to keep everyone safe – that includes pedestrians, other road users and the riders themselves and these seizures are a necessary step to make sure we do just that.

“We know that the illegal use of e-bikes has been a significant concern for local residents.

“Whilst the overwhelming majority of bike users continue to ride their bikes safely and in accordance with the law, it’s those who are using illegally modified bikes and using them carelessly that our officers will be out on the streets to identify.”

In a message to the public, Rick added:

“If you see or suspect someone is using an e-bike illegally, please report it to us online or by calling 101.

“If they are causing immediate danger, phone 999.”

Five-Hour Patrol in Falmouth

The activity followed a five-hour patrol carried out by the Neighbourhood Support Team. During the patrol, officers visited licensed premises, checked in with local businesses regarding shoplifting and gathered intelligence around potential suspects responsible for antisocial behaviour.

The Neighbourhood Support Team is a dedicated resource working across Cornwall. They provide an increased presence in communities through high visibility foot patrols and targeted enforcement activity, including stop searches, aimed at disrupting criminal activity and antisocial behaviour.

An officer from the team said:

“Whilst we cover all of Cornwall, it was great to receive positive feedback from the public whilst carrying out our foot patrols in Falmouth.”
