A box of chocolates. A tin of biscuits. A warm pair of socks. Small things, but for some people in Falmouth they could be the only gift that arrives this Christmas.

The Salvation Army in the town is asking local people, businesses and community groups to donate presents for children, older adults, and individuals and families going through difficult times.

Why the appeal matters

Christmas is meant to be about joy and togetherness. But for many people it brings worry, loneliness and money troubles instead.

The rising cost of living is still squeezing household budgets. Some families are having to choose between food, heating and other essential bills. Others are facing isolation or tough personal circumstances.

The Salvation Army wants to make sure nobody is forgotten, and that as many people as possible get to open a gift.

Captain Karen Thomas, church leader at The Salvation Army Falmouth, said: “Christmas is about so much more than presents. It is about showing people that they matter, that they are valued and that they are not forgotten. For some families, buying presents for their children simply isn’t possible when they are struggling to afford the essentials. For some older adults, Christmas can be a lonely time, while others in our community may be facing challenges that make this time of year particularly difficult. We want to reach out with love and practical kindness, helping to bring a little joy and hope to people who might otherwise go without.

“We are always touched by the generosity of our Falmouth community, and we hope people will join us again this year. Every gift, whatever its size, can make a real difference. Together, we can help ensure that nobody is left out and that everyone has the opportunity to experience a little Christmas joy.”

What to give

  • Books, arts and crafts materials, and puzzles
  • Toiletries
  • New socks, hats, scarves and gloves
  • Sweets and other small treats
  • Tins of biscuits
  • Boxes of chocolates
  • Christmas selection boxes

Gifts for older adults, and for other adults having a hard time, are especially welcome. All presents need to be new and left unwrapped so they can be sorted and passed on to the right people.

Who the gifts will reach

The donations will go to children, older adults, and individuals and families facing financial hardship, loneliness or other challenges this Christmas.

The Salvation Army is a Christian church and charity that puts its faith into action through friendship, practical help and support for people in need. In Falmouth, that work carries on all year round, with meals, a welcoming place to meet, and support for people experiencing homelessness, loneliness and other difficulties.

Anyone wanting to find out more about its work in the town, or how to support the Christmas appeal, can contact The Salvation Army on Brook Street.

Captain Karen added: “At The Salvation Army, we believe everyone matters. We see people from all walks of life in our community, and we know that difficult circumstances can affect anyone. Our hope is that, through the kindness of local people, we can share something of the true spirit of Christmas, love, compassion, generosity and the reminder that nobody has to feel forgotten.”
