A Cornish pasty, folded into a calzone and served in Birmingham. It sounds like a dare. But it’s one of the side effects of a new beer that brings one of Cornwall’s best-known pints together with a Midlands favourite.

Birmingham’s Attic has teamed up with Cornwall’s St Austell Brewery to create Proper Intuition, a 4.5% hazy pale ale that arrives in Waitrose stores across the country from this Sunday (1 November).

Two flagship beers in one glass

The new beer combines two flagships. St Austell Brewery brings Proper Job. Attic brings Intuition, its award-winning pale ale.

The collaboration is meant to celebrate the brewing expertise and regional identity of both breweries, along with the love of good beer they share. What comes out is a fresh, modern hazy pale that carries the character of both.

St Austell Brewery was founded in 1851 and is one of Cornwall’s best-known independent, family-run breweries, with a brewing heritage now spanning 175 years. Its award-winning beers include Proper Job and Tribute.

Attic is much younger. It was founded in 2018 and is based in Stirchley, Birmingham, where it brews a mix of modern and traditional styles. For Attic, the nationwide Waitrose launch is another big milestone, putting its Birmingham-brewed beer in front of new drinkers across the UK.

What the brewers say

Oli Hurlow, Co-Founder of Attic, said: “We’re really excited to be working with St Austell Brewery on Proper Intuition. Proper Job and Intuition are two beers that have played a huge part in our respective breweries’ journeys, so bringing them together felt like a brilliant opportunity to create something new.”

Oli added: “We’re incredibly proud of our Birmingham roots, and it’s fantastic to see a beer created in collaboration with such an established Cornish brewery heading into Waitrose stores nationwide.”

Georgina Young, Brewing Director at St Austell Brewery, said the partnership felt like a natural fit.

“Proper Job is an iconic beer that has been at the heart of our brewery for many years, so when the chance arose to collaborate with Attic, it felt like a natural fit,” she said. “Intuition plays a similarly important role for Attic, making this a meeting of two much-loved flagship beers.”

Georgina said the recipe was worked out with Attic’s Head Brewer, Harry Gwilliam. “It was great to work with Harry on the recipe, combining our shared passion for brewing and innovation. Proper Intuition brings together the best of both breweries, creating a fresh, modern pale ale.”

A pasty calzone for Birmingham

The Cornish link doesn’t stop at the beer. Deathrow Pizza, which operates from both of Attic’s Birmingham venues, is marking the launch with a limited-edition calzone inspired by the Cornish pasty.

It will be on the menu at Attic Taproom in Stirchley and The Barrel Store in the Jewellery Quarter from next Tuesday (3 November) to Sunday 8 November.

Deathrow Pizza only started in 2025. Its whole idea is that customers choose any combination of toppings for one fixed price, with no set menu and no extra charge for more toppings.
