Caught at 76mph in a 30 Zone: Truro Court Decision

A driver has been fined and handed penalty points after admitting a serious speeding offence in Cornwall.

Court hearing in Truro

On 4th February, Samuel Keam appeared at Truro Magistrates Court, where he entered a guilty plea to a speeding offence committed in April last year.

The court heard that Samuel was driving at 76mph in a 30mph speed limit at Goonhavern. The offence was recorded by a mobile speed camera operated by the Devon and Cornwall Police Road Safety Team.

Sentence handed down

Magistrates took the guilty plea into account when deciding the sentence. Samuel received a £400 fine and was ordered to pay £120 in costs along with a £160 victim surcharge. He also received six penalty points on his licence.

Police said he was very lucky not to lose his licence and even luckier not to have been involved in a collision at that speed.

What the victim surcharge means

The victim surcharge is a mandatory financial penalty imposed by courts in England, Wales and Scotland. It is paid in addition to a sentence or fine and goes into a central government fund used to support services for victims of crime. It is not paid directly to any individual and applies even when there is no identifiable victim.
