Hayle Runners take silver at Meet Your Max in Malpas

Meet Your Max sounds harmless enough. Then you reach Malpas and the ground stops being kind.

Eighteen Hayle Runners took on the Meet Your Max 10K trail race on Wednesday, June 17, the final outing of the 2026 Cornwall Multi-Terrain Race Series. Hosted by Truro Running Club, the course sent runners on a scenic loop around Malpas that lived up to the series name, and the Hayle men came away with second place overall.

A course with a sting in the tail

The route started fast, a downhill stretch on tarmac before it handed runners over to humid woodland trails. From there came technical descents, what felt like endless steps and rocky ground. The last obstacle was the long climb up St Clement’s Hill to the finish.

It demanded concentration the whole way. Competitors were met with strong marshalling and support throughout, capping off another well-run event.

Silver for the men’s team

The Green Army fielded 13 men and five women. The men’s team secured second place overall on the back of Liam O’Neill, Jake Summers, Jon Eldon and Andrew James, who all finished inside the top 20.

The age categories brought more to celebrate. Liam O’Neill took second in the Male 35-39 category and Andrew James claimed bronze in the Male 45-49 group. Jon Eldon extended a strong season by winning the Male 65-69 category.

Debuts and personal bests

The race was also a first outing in green for Jake Summers and Jack Searle, who both made impressive debuts for the club.

There was plenty of progress elsewhere in the field. Anne Cobell and Florence Davies-Kirsop each cut nearly five minutes off their previous course times. Andrew James went further still, taking a remarkable seven minutes off his previous best on the course, the biggest improvement of the evening.

Hayle Runners chairman Richard Collett said: “Meet Your Max is one of those races that sounds fairly innocent until you reach Malpas and start questioning your running choices that brought you there.

“The course throws absolutely everything at you, fast descents, technical trails, endless steps and this year, enough humidity in the woods to make the race feel positively soupy.

“Finishing second in the men’s team competition, welcoming Jake and Jack into their first races in green and seeing so many course PBs made it a brilliant way to round off another fantastic MTRS season.”

The club thanked Truro Running Club, the marshals and volunteers for putting on the event and bringing the 2026 Cornwall Multi-Terrain Race Series to a close.
