There aren’t many lidos left in the country, and Hayle’s is about to mark a milestone most of them never reach.

The Hayle Outdoor Swimming Pool opens for its 50th season on Saturday 23 May, and after opening day it’ll be welcoming the public right through to early September.

When you can swim

The pool opens to the public from Saturday 23 May through to Sunday 31 May. After that the pattern is weekends only through June, open Saturdays and Sundays but closed Monday to Friday. From Saturday 27 June it switches to daily opening all the way to Sunday 6 September.

There are three sessions a day, each open to all ages: 11am to 1pm, 1.30pm to 3.30pm, and 4pm to 6pm. From 7 July there’s also an adults-only session for over-18s, running 6.30pm to 8pm every Tuesday and Thursday.

Prices and booking

Entry is £4.50 for adults (18 and over) and £4 per child aged 3 to 17. Under 3s go free, and season tickets are available.

Online pre-booking is essential and can be done at hayleswimmingpool.littleboxoffice.com. There are no cash payments onsite, card only. If sessions are fully booked you’ll be turned away at the gate, so it’s worth securing a spot in advance. The council doesn’t refund sessions you cancel yourself, though you can rearrange your booking online. If the council has to cancel a session, for something like staff illness or a technical fault, guests will be contacted to rearrange or get a refund.

The council has also said it’s building a new dedicated website for the pool, with links to follow in the coming weeks.

The pool is on King George V Memorial Walk, Hayle TR27 5AA. Half a century of seasons is no small thing for an open-air pool on the Cornish coast.
