Strong day for Hayle Runners at Trevornick 10km in Cubert

The views at Trevornick are the kind people stop and photograph. The runners who tackled them on race day mostly saved the appreciation for after the finish line.

On May 10th, 58 members of Hayle Runners made the trip to Cubert for the Trevornick 10km, the sixth race in the GP series calendar. Beautiful sunshine and panoramic sea views set the scene, although the course itself had other ideas about how relaxing the day would be.

A win at the front

Sam Farmer led from the front, storming over the line to win the overall event and finish first male in 35 minutes and 50 seconds. Emma Paull matched the effort, taking silver in the ladies’ overall as second female in 42 minutes and 28 seconds.

Despite being part of the road race series, the course is mainly off road, with a coastal route and rolling terrain that tested everyone who turned up.

A tough course, a strong day

Richard Collett, chair of Hayle Runners, summed up the conditions.

“Trevornick 10K is always a tough race with the combination of the coastal route, rolling terrain and warm conditions, although the views probably go appreciated a bit more after the finish line than during it,” Richard said. “Winning the men’s team competition and finishing second in the ladies’, along with bringing home 13 age category prizes, made it another strong day in the GP season for Hayle Runners.”

He also had praise for the organisers. “Newquay Road Runners organised another excellent event and the support around the course was brilliant throughout.”

The age category haul

The 37 men and 21 ladies pulled out some brilliant PBs across the course.

Sam took first in the 20-24 category alongside his overall win, with Dan Millington coming third in the same age group. Liam O’Neill won the 35-39 category, followed by Ross Rielly in bronze. Pete Barnes clinched third in the 40-44 category, with Francis Malone Lee taking silver in the same age group.

Ian Curnow and Mark Williams both found the podium in the 55-59 category, picking up silver and bronze respectively. And a tumble couldn’t deter Steward Townend, who still secured bronze in the 80+ age group.

The Hayle ladies added plenty too. Tear Rogers scooped silver in the 20-34 age group, as did Emma in the 40-44 category. Charlotte Bennett took gold in the 50-54 category and Diane Warren did the same in the 70-74.

It all added up to the men’s team title, second place for the ladies’ team, and 13 age category prizes in total. Another strong day in the GP season, and a long drive home made shorter by the results.
