UK Marks COVID-19 Day of Reflection on Sunday 8th March 2026

Today, Sunday 8th March 2026, marks six years since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Across the UK, people are taking time to remember those who lost their lives and reflect on the impact the pandemic had on communities.

Cornwall Council said it is joining the nation in observing the COVID-19 Day of Reflection, recognising the strength shown by communities and the efforts of key workers during that time.

A Time To Remember

The Day of Reflection offers an opportunity for people to come together to remember those who died since the pandemic began. It is also a moment to recognise the tireless work and acts of kindness shown during what has been described as an unprecedented time.

The UK government confirmed its support for the annual day as part of a wider commemorative programme announced last year. Resources have also been created to remember the pandemic, including oral histories, educational materials and information about memorials.

Why The Day Is Marked

The UK Commission on Covid Commemoration was established to explore appropriate ways to remember those who died during the pandemic and to consider how this period of history should be marked.

The commission carried out consultation work with people most affected by the pandemic, including representatives from organisations supporting bereaved families. Its final report, published in September 2023, recommended creating an annual UK wide Day of Reflection.

By continuing to hold the day each year, communities across the country are given the opportunity to remember those who died and reflect on the experiences of the pandemic.

Looking Back At Previous Reflections

During the previous COVID-19 Day of Reflection on Sunday 9th March 2025, people across the UK gathered to remember those who lost their lives since the pandemic began.

The day also provided a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made by many, acknowledge the impact of the pandemic, and pay tribute to health and social care staff, frontline workers and researchers.

People also took time to appreciate those who volunteered or showed kindness to others during a challenging period.

The next COVID-19 Day of Reflection is taking place today, Sunday 8th March 2026, as communities once again pause to remember and reflect.
