Helston Flora Day: What’s Happening and When

The big bass drum strikes its first beat at seven in the morning. From that moment, Helston belongs to the dancers.

Flora Day returns to the Cornish market town on Friday 8th May, the ancient spring festival that has marked the end of winter and the arrival of new life for hundreds of years. Around eighty couples dance through the streets, in and out of selected houses and shops, driving out the darkness of winter and welcoming the light of spring. Houses and businesses across the town will be decorated with greenery and floral arrangements.

The Day’s Dances

The Morning Dance leaves the Guildhall at 7am, heading up Meneage Street before winding through Wendron Street, Godolphin Road, Penrose Road, Church Street, Cross Street and down Penhellaz Hill, finishing back at the Guildhall via Coinagehall Street.

At 8.30am, the Hal-an-Tow pageant begins at St John’s Bridge. Performers tell the story of Helston at seven locations across the town, with songs covering the Spanish Armada, St George and the fight between St Michael and the devil. The pageant follows its traditional route and concludes at the Guildhall in time for the Children’s Dance.

The Children’s Dance follows at 10am. Over 1,200 children from Helston’s four schools, dressed in white with headdresses and ties representing each school, will process from Wendron Street, through Meneage Street, Church Street and Cross Street, dancing around the gardens of Penhellis before circling the Bowling Green on Coinagehall Street. The second band will play at the junction of Wendron Street and Meneage Street, near the old Lloyds Bank building, and spectators are asked to leave space for them. The dance is expected to finish at around 11.20am, and parents should arrange collection accordingly.

The Midday Dance, also known as the Ancient Furry Dance, steps off as the Town Clock strikes twelve. Historically reserved for the gentry of Helston and the surrounding district, participation remains by invitation only, and to lead the dance you have to be Helston born. As in 2025, dancers will assemble across two locations, with first band dancers gathering at the Guildhall and second band dancers at the Museum courtyard. A cordon will guide them safely to and from their start positions. The route takes in Meneage Street, Church Street, Lismore Gardens, Penhellis House and Gardens, Cross Street, the Old Vicarage, Leslie House, Lady Street and the Bowling Green, before the final steps up Coinagehall Street back to the Guildhall.

Dancers will enter Lismore via the small gate in Cross Street, by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Corbridge, and exit without entering the gardens. Lismore Gardens will open to the public at 11.30am for the Midday Dance, with visitors asked to leave by 2.30pm. The gates will reopen at 4.30pm for the Evening Dance. Entry is limited to 1,000 spectators in line with safety and licensing requirements. Penhellis House Gardens will once again be open to the public, with dances passing through both the gardens and the house.

The Evening Dance at 5pm sees the same dancers from the morning return for the final dance of the day, following a similar route to the Midday Dance.

Helston Town Band will lead the dances again this year.

Greenery

Greenery will be available from the car park behind Boots between 7pm and 8pm on Wednesday 6th May, and again at 10am on Thursday 7th May at the Anson Gun by the Museum of Cornish Life. Residents are encouraged to collect their own where possible. All greenery should be placed in the road before 8am on Saturday 9th May for collection by Cornwall Council.

Road Closures and Getting There

Helston town centre will be closed to all non-emergency traffic from 5.30am until 10pm. Barriers will be manned by qualified operatives, and visitors are asked to respect their instructions. Vehicles should not be left parked overnight on 7th May.

Bus information is available from GoCornwall Bus, First Kernow and Traveline Southwest. Temporary bus stops will be set up outside ATS on Clodgey Lane and on the A394 at St John’s. Taxi ranks will be at Trengrouse Way and on the A394.

Parking will be available in council car parks and at temporary sites at Tesco, Helston Rugby Club, and Helston Show Field in Meneage Road. These are privately operated, with signage and traffic management in place. Parking at Tesco must be prebooked with the store. Town access is primarily on foot, with the Clodgey Lane crossing controlled by traffic lights. Disabled parking is available in town centre car parks. Visitors using unrestricted streets are asked to park considerately and avoid blocking entrances or access for emergency vehicles.

Cash Machines

Visitors are advised to withdraw cash in advance, with limited cashpoint availability and the possibility of mobile network disruption affecting card payments. Following the closure of all banks in Helston, there is only one cash point in the town centre, at JJ News on Coinagehall Street. Others can be found at Spar at the top of Meneage Street, the Texaco Garage, Tesco and Sainsbury’s on Clodgey Lane. Some charge for withdrawals. The Banking Hub on Coinagehall Street does not have a cash point, but it may be possible to withdraw cash there.

Health and Safety

Cornwall Council has committed to addressing road surface conditions across the town, but the Stewards have asked participants and spectators to remain mindful of uneven ground. Many of Helston’s surfaces can become slippery when wet, particularly cobbled areas and pavement kerbs. The town’s street-side kennels, the water channels running along several streets, are worth being aware of in Coinagehall Street and Church Street. Spectators are advised not to climb on walls to get a better view.

St John Ambulance personnel will be roaming throughout the town with an ambulance in attendance. First Aid Points will be at Coronation Park and beside the Museum of Cornish Life. The Flora Day Event Control Point is underneath the Guildhall, opposite Henlys.

Helston becomes very crowded on Flora Day, and visitors are asked to take close care of children and vulnerable adults. Carrying a contact number, ideally on a wristband, is recommended. The Lost Children Collection Point is underneath the Guildhall, opposite Henlys Bar & Restaurant. Anyone unable to locate a missing child or vulnerable adult should notify a Steward or the police.

Dogs should be kept on leads and under close control at all times. Visitors are reminded to take care of personal belongings and to report any suspicious items.

The Stewards have also asked visitors to follow their instructions, particularly around the Guildhall at the start and end of each dance, where crowds can build up quickly. Without space for the band to play and the dancers to dance, the dances cannot happen.
