Newquay Town Council is hiring, and one role pays £30,023

Fancy a job where you’re never stuck behind a desk? Newquay Town Council has two new jobs up for grabs right now, and they couldn’t be more different from each other. One puts you out on patrol dealing with dog mess and litter. The other has you keeping 13 sets of public toilets and council buildings spotless. Both come with a leave package that gets better the longer you stay.

The Enforcement Officer role

This is a full time position with irregular hours, paying £30,023 a year. The job is essentially being the eyes and ears of the town when it comes to environmental crime. You’d be out patrolling Newquay, watching for littering, dog fouling and breaches of dog control orders, and issuing fixed penalty notices where needed.

It’s not just about handing out fines. The role involves working alongside Cornwall Council, the Police and waste management providers, and a good chunk of the job is about educating people rather than catching them out. Whoever gets it will also help with signage for Public Space Protection Orders, take part in multi-agency initiatives, and may end up giving evidence in court if a case goes that far.

A Security Industry Authority licence is essential. Local knowledge of Newquay and previous experience working for a town or parish council would help, along with Community Safety Accreditation Scheme status if you already hold it. Full details are on the listing.

The Facilities Cleaning Operative role

This one is part time, 20 hours a week, also on irregular hours, and pays £14.59 an hour. The job centres on keeping the town’s public toilets and other council-owned buildings clean, safe and properly secured. With 13 sets of toilets to look after across Newquay, there’s no shortage of work.

What both jobs offer

Both roles come with the same leave structure, 25 days annual leave on top of bank holidays, rising to 28 days after five years of service (continuous service from a previous local authority job counts towards that). There’s also a Cycle to Work scheme and tech discounts on offer, plus the general appeal of working somewhere with sea views on your break.

Applications for both close on Monday 7 September, but Newquay Town Council has warned that either role could close earlier than that if enough applications come in.
