Cornwall swim lessons: the September rush you can still beat

Your child’s swimming lesson has probably sat in the same slot for a while now. Same pool, same teacher, same morning every week. But if they are starting school in September, that slot is about to stop fitting them, and the queue for the next one up gets long at exactly the moment every other parent works the same thing out.

The class change that catches parents out

Better Swim School sorts its youngest swimmers by life stage rather than birthday. Children who have not started school yet sit in the Pre-School lessons. Once school starts, the next step up is the Foundation class.

The move is not automatic, and that is where families get caught. Better is asking parents whose children are in Pre-School lessons and starting school in September to make the switch now instead of waiting for term to begin. Do it early and you choose from what is available. Do it in September, alongside everyone else, and you take what is left.

How to move your child up

If your child is already enrolled, this is a job you can do yourself. The option to move should already be showing in your HomePortal account, the same login used to track lesson progress, days and times, and any cancelled dates.

The same crunch applies to families joining from scratch, and it is worth knowing what the programme actually is before term starts. Better describes its Swim School as the largest provider of swimming lessons in the UK, teaching more than 200,000 people a week, with prices starting from as little as £3 a class depending on location.

Classes run from Swimbies, the baby and parent sessions for three months to four years, through the children’s programme and on to adult, women’s-only, disability and private lessons. Better puts the usual starting age at around four, the point at which most children have the coordination to get on with it, and adds that it is never too late to learn.

There is one perk that tends to go unnoticed. A child on a swim lesson membership gets free access to casual, lane and family swimming sessions at their home centre, subject to the terms on the Better Swim School lessons page.

Where the lessons run in Cornwall

Better is the trading name of GLL, a charitable social enterprise that works as an agent in partnership with Cornwall Council. It runs nine leisure centres across Cornwall, and all nine list swimming lessons.

They are Bodmin Leisure Centre, Bude Leisure Centre, Helston Sports Centre, Liskeard Leisure Centre, Newquay Leisure World, Saltash Leisure Centre, St Austell Leisure Centre, St Ives Leisure Centre and Truro Leisure Centre. Between them they cover most of the county, from the north coast down to the Lizard and across to the Tamar.

Booking runs through Better’s course site, where you pick your centre first and the available courses follow. Which is the bit that matters for children starting school this September. The lesson is the easy part. The slot is the scarce one.
