Cornwall weather: Sunday 27 September, gales and rain by Tuesday

If you are stepping out this Sunday morning, keep a brolly to hand for the first hour and then let the sky do the rest. Cornwall opens the week on the bright side, with sunshine running through most of the next seven days and temperatures holding around 18 to 20°C, warm for the end of September. The exception sits right in the middle. Tuesday looks set to break the run with heavy rain and gusts touching the mid-40s, so the dry days on either side are the ones to make use of.

Today, Sunday 27 September

Sunny intervals through the day, with a high of 20°C and a damp start. The Met Office puts the chance of rain at 80% first thing, with light rain around 8am, before it brightens up. It will feel a touch cooler than the numbers suggest, closer to 17°C, and there is some bite in the wind with gusts up to 37mph from the south-south-east.

Tonight

Skies clear overnight and the wind eases right down. It stays mild for the time of year, the temperature holding around 11°C, so there is little chill to speak of after dark.

Monday 28 September

A straightforward sunny day. Highs of 18°C, only a 10% chance of rain and not until late in the evening, with lighter winds gusting around 21mph. A good one for anything outdoors before the week turns.

Tuesday 29 September

This is the day to plan around. Heavy rain is forecast, the wettest and windiest spell of the week, with gusts pushing up to 44mph. Rain is most likely through the afternoon, around a 40% chance by 3pm, and yet the temperature still climbs to 20°C in the muggy air. If you have jobs that need dry weather, Monday or Wednesday will serve you better.

Wednesday to the weekend

The sunshine returns almost as quickly as it left. Wednesday 30 September brings sunny intervals and a high of 19°C, though a 40% chance of a morning shower and gusts of 34mph show the week is still settling. Thursday 1 October eases to sunny intervals, 18°C and calmer at 21mph. Friday 2 October looks the pick of the run, full sunshine, 18°C and the wind down to a gentle 19mph. Saturday 3 October carries the bright theme into the weekend with sunny intervals and 19°C.

So the pattern reads bright, then briefly wild, then bright again. Whether Tuesday’s rain and gusts arrive exactly on cue is the part worth keeping an eye on.
