A yacht crew radioed in something odd off the coast near Fowey on Thursday morning, an upturned yellow kayak, drifting with nobody around it. Within minutes a lifeboat crew was heading out to check nobody was in trouble in the water below.

A call from Falmouth Coastguard

On Thursday 27 August, Falmouth Coastguard tasked Fowey RNLI to launch the station’s D class lifeboat, after a yacht reported spotting the upturned kayak. The crew launched at 8:25am and made for the position the yacht had given them, confirming the details with the vessel once they reached the scene.

Searching the rocks between the two Lantics

The kayak itself was found wedged on rocks between Lantic beach and Little Lantic beach. With it located, the crew searched the surrounding water and shoreline for any sign of a person, or anything that might explain how the kayak had ended up there. They found nothing.

A kayak that had drifted a while

The kayak had signs of having been in the water for some time already, more the marks of something lost or abandoned than a boat that had just gone over under someone. Rather than leave it on the rocks to trigger the same alarm a second time, the RNLI crew recovered it and brought it back to the station.

Whoever it belonged to has not come forward.
