Hayle Runners take both titles at sold-out Marazion 10K
Organising a race for 550 people is a big enough job on its own. Winning most of the prizes at it on the same day is something else.
That is what Hayle Runners managed at the Marazion 10K on Sunday 27 September, the penultimate race of the 2026 Cornwall Grand Prix season. The host club took both individual victories, first and third place in both team competitions and 18 age-category prizes.
All 550 places had gone before race day, and 505 runners made it to the start line in Marazion. Of those, 87 were wearing Hayle vests.
On paper the single-lap road course sounds simple: three left turns and 10 kilometres. But it packs in 131 metres of climbing. After a downhill start, runners faced rolling roads through Plain-an-Gwarry, Chynoweth, Penberthy Cross and Gwallon before a final uphill push to the finish at Marazion Community Hall. The morning began overcast, then warm sunshine arrived to make the hills harder still.

Sam Farmer and Emma Paull lead the field
Hayle’s Sam Farmer won the race in 34:24, finishing 26 seconds clear of Dan Rodgers of Newquay Road Runners (34:50). Francis Malone-Lee, also of Hayle, was third in 35:20. It was his first overall podium in a Grand Prix race.
Emma Paull continued a strong run of form to take the ladies’ title in 37:42, which put her 11th overall. Sarah Hoskin of Mile High was second in 38:29 and Hannah Harrison third in 40:39.
First and third in both team races
Hayle won the men’s team competition with 33 points, scored by Sam Farmer, Francis Malone-Lee, Daniel Millington, Amar Musneckis, Kyle Hampton and Neil Hayhurst. Cornwall AC were second on 104 points. Hayle’s second team of Steven Wherry, Jon Eldon, Craig Pound, Ian Curnow, Samuel Little and Mark Williams took third with 189.
The ladies’ competition went the same way. Emma Paull, Arianna Caddy, Gail Aspden, Ruby King, Tamara Kearney and Tear Rogers won with 79 points, ahead of Cornwall AC on 142. Hayle’s second team of Octavia Carey, Andrea Simmons, Amy Greef, Corinne Gerrard, Maddy Knowles and Julia Burns were third on 202.
Age-category prizes from 20 to 80-plus
Hayle’s 87 finishers were made up of 46 ladies and 41 men, and between them they collected 18 age-category prizes.

There were stories further down the field too. Octavia Carey ran a personal best on her Hayle debut and went straight into the club’s second ladies’ team. Craig Pound also ran a PB in his first appearance in a Hayle men’s scoring team, and Maddy Knowles made her first ladies’ team appearance.
Julia Burns was racing for the first time in six years. She came away with a place in the third-placed ladies’ team and a win in her age category. Abi Redfearn completed her first 10K in a Hayle vest.
Months of work behind race day
While 87 members were racing, many more were working. Volunteers from the club handled course setup, registration, marshalling, road closures, the finish area and the presentation. Race director Jamie Gore led the preparations.
Hayle Runners chairman Richard Collett said: “There aren’t many days when you can organise a race for 550 people and somehow also come away with both individual winners, both first teams and both third teams on the podium. I’m not sure we could have asked much more from the day.
“Sam and Emma were superb at the front, and seeing Francis earn his first GP podium was particularly pleasing, but the strength throughout the club was just as impressive. Eighty-seven Hayle runners finished, with people racing right across the age groups and plenty of PBs and firsts along the way.
“None of that happens without the other side of the club, though. An event of this size takes months of preparation and an enormous number of people giving up their time. From the people standing on junctions and setting up the course to those working behind the scenes long before anybody pins on a race number, we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make the day possible.”
The club thanked race adjudicator Neville Witham, and Marazion Mayor Richard Stokoe, who joined organisers for the presentation and helped hand out the prizes. It also thanked residents and the wider Marazion community for their patience while the race and its road closures took place.

Sponsors and supporters
The race was again supported by St Ives Brewery, Heyl CrossFit and Bradleys Estate Agents. Bradleys sponsored the race mementos, St Ives Brewery gave adult finishers a can of low-alcohol Slipway IPA, and Heyl CrossFit provided membership prizes for age-category winners.
Florence Sargent of RED-Scue was at the event to talk to runners about sports fuelling. The Cornish Barista and Mr B’s Ice Cream provided refreshments at race headquarters.
Daniel Wheeler photographed the race around the course and at the finish. His pictures are in the Marazion 10K 2026 photo gallery.
