Little Shop of Horrors: a hungry plant heads for Rilla Mill

There is something large, green and hungry sitting in a shop window in Liskeard. People have been stopping to stare at it.

By the end of October it will have moved to Rilla Mill. And it will be singing.

Teylu’s first musical

After a summer run of Calendar Girls, Teylu Theatre Company is taking on its first musical, Little Shop of Horrors, just in time for Halloween.

The show comes to Rilla Mill Village Hall over October half term, from Wednesday 28 October to Saturday 31 October. There are evening performances at 7.30pm each night, plus a 2.30pm matinee on the Saturday.

“With its catchy music, bizarre storyline and strange and interesting plant, Little Shop of Horrors is great fun, often poignant and sometimes quite ridiculous,” says Jane Warwick from the creative team.

“It’s the perfect start to Teylu Theatre Company’s Musical Theatre experience. The cast are just brilliant and we are really looking forward to bringing this upbeat production to life within the local community.”

A family, eighteen months in

Teylu means family in Cornish. The company has been going for just eighteen months and is based in south east Cornwall.

Its aim is to give adults in the area a chance to perform on stage, help out backstage and front of house, and be part of an inclusive, creative family. Hundreds of people came to see Calendar Girls across four locations in Cornwall and Devon in July and August.

“2026 has been an incredibly exciting year for Teylu,” says the company’s chair, Laura Pearson.

“We completed a really successful run of Calendar Girls in the summer with sellout shows, fabulous audience feedback and £7,000 raised for our charity partner. This autumn our first musical, Little Shop of Horrors will be a brilliant night of entertainment with a live band, talented performers and, of course, amazing puppets.”

Laura says the two productions give members a wide range of performance and creative opportunities, and meet one of the company’s main objectives: “to bring quality and affordable theatre to underserved communities.”

“Eighteen months after our creation, the achievements are a testament to the wealth of talent, creativity and commitment to theatre in our special corner of Cornwall, and I am very proud to be a part of that.”

Audrey II takes up residence in Liskeard

That strange and interesting plant has a name. Audrey II is already creating a stir in the window of Boost House in Liskeard.

Sam Jackman at Boost is once again backing local community theatre by offering the space for rehearsals, as she did for Calendar Girls.
