Major Traffic Disruption Looms as Urgent A38 Upgrades Begin
MP Anna Gelderd Holds Emergency Meeting to Address Concerns
Residents of Saltash are bracing for significant transport disruption as urgent upgrades to the A38 and Tamar Bridge lighting system begin. With the town serving as a key entry point into Cornwall, South East Cornwall MP Anna Gelderd has stepped in, calling an urgent meeting with transport stakeholders to mitigate the impact of the works on both road and rail users.
Transport Stakeholders Unite
This morning, Anna brought together key transport organisations, including National Highways, Network Rail, and Great Western Railway, alongside local councillors. The focus of the meeting was on how to tackle the critical issues facing Saltash and the wider region, from congested roads to disrupted rail services.
Anna Gelderd stressed the importance of a reliable transport system, saying, “A reliable transport system is the backbone of our local economy and vital for the daily lives of residents. I’ve called this meeting to ensure that transport organisations hear directly from our communities.”
Key Issues Highlighted
During the meeting, several areas for improvement were highlighted to ensure minimal disruption for residents and commuters. These include:
- Reducing Congestion: Strategies were discussed to manage the expected traffic congestion, especially along the already busy A38.
- Access to Medical Services: Ensuring access to essential services, such as appointments at Derriford Hospital, remains a top priority.
- Train Timetables: Ongoing discussions with Great Western Railway about how to adjust timetables during the disruption.
- Clear Communication: Emphasis was placed on maintaining transparency and regular updates between transport operators and the public throughout the improvement works.
- Cross-Border Collaboration: Anna stressed the importance of working with Plymouth City Council and other MPs to ensure coordinated action on both sides of the border.
Public Urged to Stay Involved
Anna is calling on the public to remain engaged, encouraging residents to voice their concerns and provide feedback to transport organisations. She emphasised that community involvement will be crucial in delivering practical solutions to these local transport issues.
As South East Cornwall continues to grow, Anna Gelderd is committed to advocating for modernising and expanding the region’s transport infrastructure. Her focus on cross-party collaboration and coordination with local authorities highlights her dedication to addressing the ongoing challenges faced by her constituents.
